JOURNAL

Jody and I attended the LOON production of A Little Night Music at MPAC. It was really well done.

I was in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday. For part of one of those afternoons, my friend Matias drove down to DM the very first trial session of D&D in the new TTRPG room at the BigBadGameStore.

I visited my awesome friend Julie while I was in town. We had so much great conversation that we forgot to take pictures — so she sent a re-enactment after the fact. (She also has a lime tree with baby limes!)

Jody and I toured this beautifully designed house on Park Point this week.

I met friends at New Scenic for lunch and had this fantastic creation — a compressed melon dish.

I went to see my friends in Ole & Lena's Wedding at the Boat Club on Friday. And yes, I had the tater tot hotdish.

Saturday was the 50th Grandma's Marathon. We cheered from the end of our driveway like always, using spatulas, ladles, and other kitchen implements to save our hands — which can get pretty sore after hours of clapping.

We had some really beautiful sunsets this week. I love summer in Duluth.

WHAT I WATCHED THIS WEEK

Thief poster
Thief (1981).Michael Mann's version of Le Samouraï or The Driver. James Caan. Tuesday Weld. Jim Belushi. A twitchy Willie Nelson. A terrifying Robert Prosky. Some Rififi nods. Mann's casual formalism. Narrative abstraction. An '80s synth score from Tangerine Dream, and a neon-soaked Chicago.

WHAT I READ THIS WEEK

Finished:

Jitterbug book cover
Jitterbug, by Gareth L. Powell. (Audiobook) One of Powell's most recent novels. Space opera on a grand scale: Dyson spheres, moons used as spacecraft parts, shipminds with parrot avatars, and toolbox projectiles.
Dept. of Speculation book cover
Dept. of Speculation, by Jenny Offill. A series of short paragraph fragments written from the perspective of a woman reflecting on her stalled writing career, her faltering relationship, and motherhood. Hilarious and heartbreaking.

MEMORIES

Ten Years Ago:
Ten years ago we held a press conference to announce the deal to restore the NorShor Theatre! It's wild to think about everything that has happened since then.

WHAT I'M EXCITED ABOUT

I'm not exactly excited about this, but it's occupying all of my plans for the rest of the summer: I'm having hernia repair surgery next week. I'll be spending the next couple of weeks mostly resting, and I'll be restricted in movement and lifting for the next couple of months.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"If you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life but still the same amount of snow."

That's it for this week. Stay safe, friends. Thanks for reading!
